Islamabad: Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a fresh nationwide alert warning of an intensifying cold wave across northern regions, urging residents to take precautionary measures as temperatures continue to plunge.
According to the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operations Center (NEOC), harsh winter conditions are likely to persist over the coming days in Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Potohar region, and northern Balochistan. Authorities say the prolonged cold spell could disrupt daily life, affect health, and pose risks to agriculture and travel.
The advisory specifically warns of a sharp increase in cold intensity in northern Balochistan, with Quetta, Ziarat, and Kalat expected to experience freezing temperatures. In these areas, residents may face increased hardship due to icy winds, low nighttime temperatures, and limited mobility in early morning and evening hours.
The NEOC cautioned that extreme cold weather significantly raises the risk of respiratory illnesses, particularly among children, senior citizens, and people with existing health conditions. Health experts recommend wearing warm clothing, avoiding prolonged outdoor exposure, and ensuring proper indoor heating where possible.
In addition to health concerns, the NDMA warned that dense fog combined with cold weather could severely reduce visibility in plain areas, increasing the likelihood of road accidents. Commuters, especially those traveling during early morning hours, have been urged to drive cautiously and delay non-essential travel when visibility is poor.
The advisory also raised concerns over the potential impact on standing crops, particularly in areas vulnerable to frost. Prolonged low temperatures may damage crops and reduce yields, prompting the NDMA to advise farmers to adopt protective agricultural measures to minimize losses.
The NDMA said it remains on high alert and is actively monitoring weather conditions across affected regions. The Authority emphasized that it is ensuring the timely dissemination of early warnings to provincial and local institutions, enabling quick response and preparedness.
Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to stay informed through official weather updates, follow instructions from local authorities, and assist elderly family members and neighbors during the cold spell.
As winter tightens its grip, authorities stress that awareness and preparedness remain the best defense against weather-related risks.
