Islamabad woke up to tragedy early Sunday when a gas cylinder explosion ripped through a house shortly after a wedding reception, killing at least eight people, including the newlywed bride and groom. The powerful blast occurred in a residential neighborhood in the heart of the capital, turning a night of celebration into mourning.
According to Islamabad police, the explosion happened while family members and guests were asleep inside the house following the wedding festivities. The force of the blast caused a portion of the building to collapse, trapping several people under the rubble. Seven others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals, where some remain in critical condition.
Emergency services and police teams reached the scene soon after receiving distress calls in the early hours of Sunday. Rescue workers worked for hours to pull survivors from the debris and secure the damaged structure. Authorities also evacuated nearby homes as a precaution, as the explosion damaged adjoining buildings.
A senior government administrator, Sahibzada Yousaf, confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the blast. Initial findings suggest a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder leak, but officials say forensic teams will complete a detailed inspection before drawing conclusions.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, calling the incident heartbreaking. In a statement from his office, he offered condolences to the bereaved families and directed health authorities to provide the best possible medical care to the injured.
The prime minister also ordered a comprehensive investigation to identify negligence, if any, and to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Officials said a detailed report will be submitted once inquiries are completed.
Gas cylinder explosions are a recurring problem across Pakistan, particularly in urban areas where many households rely on LPG due to low natural gas pressure. Poor-quality cylinders, faulty valves, and lack of regular safety checks have been linked to several deadly incidents in recent years.
Safety experts have repeatedly warned that improper storage and handling of gas cylinders can lead to catastrophic consequences. Despite periodic government advisories, enforcement of safety standards remains weak, especially in residential areas.
Neighbors described scenes of panic and grief as families gathered outside the damaged house. What was meant to be the beginning of a new life for the young couple ended in unimaginable loss, leaving the community in shock.
As authorities continue their investigation, the tragedy has once again raised urgent questions about gas safety, regulation, and awareness in Pakistan’s cities.
