Babar Azam’s long-awaited debut in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) ended in disappointment, as the Pakistan batting star managed just two runs for Sydney Sixers in their opening match against Perth Scorchers on December 14.
Fans had packed social media with excitement following Babar’s high-profile signing, but rain and early pressure combined to make it a forgettable first outing.
The match at Perth Stadium was reduced to 11 overs per side due to persistent rain, leaving little room for batters to settle. Sydney Sixers got off to a shaky start after losing Daniel Hughes early.
Babar walked in under pressure but struggled to find his rhythm. In the third over, fast bowler Brody Couch dismissed him after the right-hander attempted a big shot over mid-on. The timing was off, and the ball landed safely in the hands of fielder Laurie Evans. Babar’s exit left the Sixers reeling at 15 for 2.
Soon after Babar’s dismissal, the official Big Bash League account shared a video clip of his first delivery a dot ball. The post quickly drew mixed reactions online.
While some fans viewed it as harmless fun, others felt the post unfairly targeted the former Pakistan captain. Social media platforms soon filled with jokes and criticism, adding to the spotlight on Babar’s tough start in the tournament.
Despite Babar’s disappointing debut, Pakistani fans will still have plenty to cheer for as the tournament progresses. Several other Pakistan players, including Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Shadab Khan, and Hasan Ali, are set to feature in the BBL this season.
Their presence ensures strong interest from cricket fans back home, even as Babar looks to bounce back in upcoming matches.
