Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam is still searching for his best touch in the Big Bash League, and his latest outing ended in disappointment and drama at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Playing for Sydney Sixers against Melbourne Stars, Babar once again failed to make a big impact with the bat. Opening the innings in a modest chase of 129 runs, the right-hander was dismissed for 14 off 17 balls, extending his run of low scores in the tournament.
What caught even more attention than the dismissal itself was the heated exchange between Babar and Marcus Stoinis, which added spice to an already tense contest.
The Sixers’ chase got off to a shaky start when captain Moises Henriques was dismissed cheaply in the third over. With pressure building early, Babar Azam was expected to anchor the innings and guide his side safely through the powerplay.
At the other end, Josh Philippe, who has been in fine form this season, looked fluent and confident. The pair stitched together a brief 28-run partnership, bringing some stability after the early setback.
However, just as the Sixers seemed to regain control, Marcus Stoinis stepped in and turned the game on its head.
The key moment came in the seventh over. Bowling from over the wicket, Stoinis delivered a sharp good-length ball that jagged back into Babar. The Pakistani batter missed his shot completely, and the ball struck him flush in front of the stumps.
The Stars appealed loudly, and the umpire had no hesitation in raising his finger.
As Babar paused to consider a DRS review, Stoinis celebrated aggressively, giving the Sixers opener a verbal send-off. The reaction highlighted how big a wicket Babar remains, even during a lean patch.
Babar’s struggles in the BBL have become a talking point, especially given his reputation as one of the world’s finest batters. While his technique and temperament are well known, adapting quickly to Australian conditions and fast-paced T20 cricket has proven challenging this season.
Despite the criticism, teammates and fans alike know that class players don’t stay quiet for long. A single strong innings could easily turn things around for the former Pakistan captain.
The Sixers will now hope their middle order can carry them through upcoming matches, while Babar looks to reset mentally and find rhythm in the games ahead.
