Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has landed in disciplinary trouble after an emotional outburst during the Tri-Series final against Sri Lanka, with the ICC handing him a fine for showing dissent toward the umpires.
The incident occurred in the closing stages of Pakistan’s innings, during the 19th over of the high-pressure final. Fakhar Zaman, visibly frustrated after being given out, engaged in a prolonged argument with the on-field umpires before walking back to the pavilion.
Match officials later flagged the incident in their report, prompting the International Cricket Council (ICC) to review the matter under its Code of Conduct.
Following the review, the ICC confirmed that Fakhar breached Article 2.8, which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match.”
As a result, Fakhar Zaman has been fined 10 percent of his match fee and handed one demerit point. This is his first demerit point in the past 24 months, meaning no further action was required at this stage.
Under ICC regulations, however, repeated offences within a two-year period can result in heavier sanctions, including suspensions. Players are allowed up to four demerit points before facing match bans.
The ICC noted that Fakhar accepted the sanction, meaning there was no need for a formal hearing.
The Tri-Series final itself was a tense and closely fought contest, with pressure mounting on both teams in the final overs. Fakhar’s dismissal came at a crucial moment, adding to Pakistan’s challenges late in the innings.
While competitive intensity is expected in finals, officials felt the exchange crossed the line and disrupted the spirit of the game.
Cricket authorities regularly emphasize that players must respect umpiring decisions, even in moments of frustration.
In its statement, the ICC reiterated the importance of discipline and professionalism, particularly during high-profile matches watched by millions worldwide.
“Respect for officials is a cornerstone of the game,” the governing body noted, urging players to set positive examples on the field.
The fine is unlikely to have long-term consequences for Fakhar, but it does serve as a warning. With major international tournaments ahead, maintaining discipline will be crucial for Pakistan’s senior players.
