New Zealand’s commanding victory over the West Indies in the second Test has caused a notable shake-up in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 standings, with Pakistan and India both dropping a place after the Kiwis surged into the top three.
The hosts sealed a dominant win in Wellington, chasing down a modest target of just 56 runs before tea on day three. The result marked New Zealand’s first victory of the current WTC cycle and lifted them from sixth to third place on the points table. As a result, Pakistan slipped to fifth, while India moved down to sixth, adding fresh intrigue to the early stages of the championship race.
The match was effectively decided by New Zealand’s bowlers, led by Jacob Duffy, who produced another outstanding performance. The fast bowler claimed a five-wicket haul, ripping through the West Indies’ batting line-up and bundling them out for just 128 in their second innings.
The collapse began early when Brandon King was run out, triggering a rapid slide. Key batters Shai Hope and Roston Chase were dismissed cheaply, leaving the visitors struggling to build any momentum. While Kavem Hodge and debutant Justin Greaves showed brief resistance, their efforts were not enough to stop the inevitable.
With a small target on the board, New Zealand’s batters made no mistakes. Tom Latham and Devon Conway approached the chase calmly, ensuring there were no late surprises. Conway remained unbeaten on 28, while Kane Williamson finished the match in style with a quick 16 off 12 balls, sealing a comprehensive victory.
Captain Tom Latham praised the team’s all-round performance, highlighting Duffy’s impact with the ball and wicketkeeper Mitch Hay’s composed approach during crucial moments.
The win has immediate implications for the WTC table. New Zealand’s jump into third place strengthens their position early in the cycle, while Pakistan and India now face added pressure to regain momentum in upcoming series. With several high-profile Test contests scheduled, the standings are expected to remain fluid.
The final Test of the series between New Zealand and the West Indies is set to begin on December 18 in Mount Maunganui, where the visitors will look to restore pride and valuable WTC points.
